TWB 04/12 Mineral oil components from cardboard packaging materials
A new method for the determination of polymer film barriers
Migration of mineral oil components through packaging filmsMineral oil permeation through packaging films was determined by spiking cardboard film systems with 15 representative standard substances and subsequently storing these in a climate chamber in direct contact with a barrier film. A constant flow of nitrogen through the film system was analysed for constituent mineral oil components via gas chromatography with flame ionisation detection (GC/FID). Significantly increased barrier properties in comparison to a reference HDPE film were found for 10 different films. The developed method is a useful tool for determining suitability of barrier films for mineral oil applications.
