By reducing waste and pollution, the utilization of biopolymers supports environment protection as well as human health. However, some chemical modifications are required. In order to increase the hydrophobicity of a single layer PVOH film, chemical grafting with varied process parameters was investigated. The modified PVOH films were then characterized by determining the solubility, water vapor transmission rate and surface energy of the polymer film, espectively. The modification process proved appropriate to produce a hydrophobic film suitable as a packaging material for fluids with high water contents (> 5 %).
