In order to provide the technical conditions for launching easy-to-open packaging concepts, peelable films have been designed throughout the last years. This type of packaging is increasingly demanded by consumers and the packaging industry, not only because of the demographic change. Currently, there is no method for predetermination of the opening force of real packages in the process of packaging design. Test standards like ASTM F-88 or DIN 55529 are less suitable to solve this issue due to unrealistic test parameters and the non-consideration of the real contour of the sealed seam. A method to predetermine the opening force – opening distance progression based on CAD data of the sealing contour is presented.
