Record for paper and cardboard recycling
The recycling rate for paper and folding carton packaging has risen to a new record level throughout Europe. This is confirmed by the figures recently presented by the European Union (EU) for Global Recycling Day (18 March 2019).
In the 28 EU countries, the recycling rate, per EU definition based on the total proportion of recycled material in relation to the total amount of packaging waste generated, is now 85.8% for paper and folding carton packaging waste. This group thus also occupies the leading position among all the packaging materials analyzed (glass, plastic, paper/cardboard, metal, wood and other materials). Packaging made of metal (78.3 %) and glass (74.1 %) closely followed in second and third place respectively.
Second Global Recycling Day
The fact that cardboard is the most sustainable packaging option is also confirmed by a recent study conducted by the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. Their tests showed that folding cartons can be recycled up to 25 times.
The Global Recycling Day on 18 March 2019 with the motto "Recycling into the future" took place for the second time this year.
