Swedish group AR Packaging, by its own account, is first on the market to present a gas tight pressed board tray packaging for chilled foods as a replacement of plastic trays. This solution is said to give a shelf life of at least 18 days. “We thereby meet the needs for a wide range of chilled food products, such as fresh meat and chicken, processed meat, cheese and ready meals etc.,” says Åke Larsson, Managing Director at CC Pack. The trays are converted by CC Pack and the lidding material comes from Flextrus, both members of AR Packaging and situated in Sweden. The trays are produced with barrier coated board Trayforma from Stora Enso, which also was involved in the development.

Tests are ongoing

The board trays reportedly are supplied together with a matching lidding material which provides a safe seal and a barrier adapted to the packed product’s needs. The new gas tight board tray concept reportedly is not only a more sustainable alternative to plastic trays with high proportion of renewable materials. It also is said to support product branding thanks to its look and feel of paper.

According to its manufacturer, tests are already ongoing with several major chilled food producers in Europe.
